A duo (see what I did there?) of talented PC Engine coders with one major game release and a sound library for PC Engine developers. New titles are in the works. Mednafen Mednafen is a powerful multiconsole emulator that is hailed for its accuracy. It's commandline-only, so you will either need to understand the command line or use a frontend. Mednafen isn't just for the PC Engine, it supports all of NEC's consoles and several others, including the NES, Wonderswan, and more. Between its multiple console support and its high level of accuracy, it has become the perfect developer's emulator for many platforms. And the best part: it's absolutely free! The NEC Console Resource pcenginefx.com is the ultimate English source of information related to all NEC consoles, including the "Turbo TV Archive". Unfortunately, they don't tend to update very often, but the site has a very active forum. Lazer Dorks Keranu's fun little webpage where he and several others give some pretty whack reviews of older (and sometimes newer) games. Worth a look for sure! Zeograd's lair Home of HuC, the only dedicated C compiler for the PC Engine, as well as Hu-Go!, a decent cross-platform PC Engine emulator. The site also has a lot of example code for aspiring PC Engine programmers. It's not updated very often though. MagicEngine Homepage Magic Engine used to be the premiere PC Engine emulator but it has been overshadowed by other emulators. It's still the most polished in terms of presentation, but it lacks in the emulation accuracy department. This is a gamer's emulator, and will run many games seemingly "better" than real hardware due to improper emulation (flicker disappears, so games like R-Type don't suffer like they do on the real thing, but this also has the side-effect of failing on games that rely on sprite overflow). Get this if you just want to play games, as no other emulator is as "pretty". MindRec A successful PC Engine release team with original titles, including Meteor Blaster, Meteor Blaster DX, and Implode. They seem to have left PC Engine development nowadays though. The Brothers Duomazov "Three stout men's burly opinions on every Turbo Grafx game ever made." In other words, a review site. It's one of the most popular dedicated review sites on the web right now. Worth a look. DAEMON Tools Homepage An excellent CDROM/DVD-ROM emulator. This has proven very useful for our development here in testing our ISO images with MagicEngine. ThumbView Very useful for PC Engine developers using Windows XP; this extends Windows Explorer to allow additional image formats to display in Thumbnail view, including PCX, which we use a lot in PCE development. Get it if you're a PCE developer or want to become one. |
